Aikido (合氣道) is comprised of three characters: ai, meaning harmony; ki, spirit or energy; and do, the path or the way. Also known as the Art of Peace, aikido is a Japanese martial art developed in the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba, or O-Sensei - "Great Teacher." Aikido is noncompetitive and involves studying techniques designed to blend with the energy of an attacker, neutralizing aggression safely and efficiently. Partnered practice cultivates the spirit of cooperation while refining kokyu -"breath power," connection, and balance. As a budo - "martial way," the practice of aikido emphasizes the concepts of kaizen - "continuous improvement" and approaching training with a beginner's mind.
